I found Tuesday’s conversation about time in class particularly interesting but at the same time thoroughly frustrating, and I think the whole class summed up what we know about time – pretty much nothing (not to degrade anyone’s thoughts) I found what Leslie said about time very interesting, that “time is defined by the contents that make it up”. Or something to that effect. For me this idea really worked. I think it was Chris or Jake who mentioned that time is relative and if it is defined by the contents, our contents, then how we view time is all about what we do with it.
I also wanted to talk a little about what I felt defined time. When I thought about it, time has always existed. Sure, there have not always been sundials and watches, but there has always been a sense of time by everything in existence. Everything is brought into this world and at some point or another, it is no longer in existence, what we may call the span of its life. Some things, like rocks may “live” for a greater amount of time relative to a cat. Once again we are using the word relative. Therefore, for us, I believe time is the same as it always has been, but may seem to be going faster because of “new media”. I don’t’ want to exclude any other technological innovation or invention at that, but the more things we find to do, the more we have to cram into the predetermined amount of existence we have. So NO I don’t believe time is going faster but that we are doing more in what we have.
