Beyand McLuhan
We've heard time and time again from various sources that technology is an extension of the body or the senses. McLuhan, in particular speaks of the extension of the nervous system and other senses altering in relation to technology/media. Hakim Bey speaks of investing "heavily in any scheme that offers escape from the b0dy". I wonder if McLuhan would use such a phrase to describe media. I am not sure he would agree that media is a way of escape from the body. I think he would argue that the body must very much so be present and co-acting with the media in order for it to serve its purpose. However, in doing so, one is escaping the nature or innate limitation of the human body. So in a way it is an escape, an escape from bodily constraints through facilitating the use of media to the best effect.
