What is our adaptation to our concept of human if memories become a commodity?
The entire concept of implanting a memory from one human into another human is problematic. It is problematic, because "memory" itself is problematic. What is a memory? A memory is more than an experience, because the way in which one remembers a certain experience may not actually be how the experience actually/factually occurred. So then, is a memory an interpreted experience? A memory is a recollection of the past, but it is a recollection dependent on the person recollecting. Not only will they recall the experience itself, but also other implications of the experience; how they felt, who was there, what others did, could have done, or did. Human communication, as we've discussed in class is so complicated that it definitely can effect memories. For example, let's say that when I was 12 my mom told an embarrassing story of me throwing a stupid fit or something, to her co-workers who I know well. My memory of that could be a memory of betrayal. My mom took something intimate and shared it knowing I did not approve at all. My memory could be a memory of simply a fight that my mom needed to vent about and happened to be at work, so she vented at work to her co-workers. These are two different interpretations of the same experience. It depends on me how I remember it. Both interpretations could have occured, but maybe only one is a part of my memory. An interesting thing to not now would be the effect of time on the memory. I don't mean old age and memory loss or any of that, but just how your interpretation of a past experience may change with time, age, maturity, other experiences, etc. Is it the same memory then if you remember it differently over time, or is it a new memory of an old memory?
Another major question in my mind that follows the above paragraph is, what would this mean for the implantation of memory? If we take my memory and implant it in another human, would they automatically have the memory as I had it at the time with the same interpretations and emphasis and de-emphasis on certain aspects? Would they have access to the whole experience as it factually was in the past or just my memory, which I said earlier is subject to vast interpretation? Would the person receiving the implant have the ability to interpret my memory? And if they did would it be an interpretation of my interpretation so to speak?
