I was thinking about what McLuhan wrote about advertising, and how nowadays it can be a legitimate form of art. I would agree with him in the respect that it cannot be considered as high art by any means. Now it is the most visual form of creativity, though its primary use is to manipulate the masses into the acceptance of a product. During the class discussion I kept trying to think of commercials that I would consider on the same level as works of art. The image that I got in my head was the early-to-mid-nineties Budweiser commercials. From my best recollection, I see horses pulling a sleigh through a tame winter blizzard. I have to admit, it kind of makes me feel good. It reminds me of when I used to watch Yogi Bears Christmas special that my parent taped in the late eighties when I was young. The commercials aesthetic value was to make me think of beer when I was enjoying any pleasant surreal emotion during a winter evening, instead of deaths caused by drunk driving and other abuses of alcohol. Well done Budweiser, well done.
