What is interesting to me about time and new media is that one of the reasons new media was and is created, was so that humans could do things quicker, easier, and more efficiently. Computers help us quickly communicate, pull up information, and create faster than we have ever been able to do before. So I thought it was interesting when we talked in class about the fact that with new media, we now have learned to multi-task and get even more things done with our time than before. Then why are we so busy all the time? Why do we feel like we can never relax?
New media has not so much created extra leisure time for us as it has added more hecticness to our lives. We now are EXPECTED to be able to handle one millions things at once and get them done in a timely fashion. We have tighter deadlines, smaller turn around times, and a world of technology to accomplish this.
Also, I wanted to comment on the movie "Waking Life" and the concept of dreams that we discussed in class. I mentioned that while we feel so crunched for time in our waking moments, when we are asleep, we may be able to accomplish a whole day's worth of tasks and chores in just 10 minutes of dreaming. How is this possible? How does time work so differently in our dreams but feel as real as it would during our waking moments.? What really is "time" then? How is it one way in our dreams and completely different in our waking moments?
