I found I kept thinking about science fiction movies and books when I read J.C.R. Licklider’s article about man-computer symbiosis. The main image that I had was the Hal 9000 in Arthur C. Clarke’s novel Space Odyssey and then in Stanley Kubrick’s 2001: A Space Odyssey. This may be a stretch, but would that have been an example of this man-computer symbiosis? All the travelers on the ship were dependent to the Hal 9000 and vice versa. But besides all that I found the article to be pretty thought provoking. I think that we are getting pretty close to having these relationships with computers. Maybe we already do have them and I just haven’t put enough thought into it. I was absent from class on Tuesday so I don’t know what I missed. The article tied in nicely to the Morse article about the gender of cyberspace. I think it can be seen as a female since inevitably we will have these dependent relationships with it almost as man does with his own mother. Just a thought to go out on.
