I think the most thought-provoking thing about Chesher’s article is how technology is outdating the metaphors it created. Using the word “digital” in front of computer is not only redundant, but has lost its meaning through more advanced technology.
Technology shapes our modern language. If it weren’t for cars we would never have been able to say, “You are driving me crazy.” Who knows what will happen down the road. Will a “broken link” refer to a loss of memory. Perhaps an “internal error” will occur when body systems refuse to work properly. We already refer to a body “shutting down” when a person’s body just stops performing functionally. These terms are all commonplace in the technology world, but connecting them in a different context is what allows commonality and higher understanding.
