The Original Content

In McLuhan’s article, he discusses the point that mediums only deliver another medium. We talked in class, in particular about writing vs. speech. When we write, we are delivering another medium – speech. My question then becomes, if everything only delivers another medium, where exactly is the content? What is the original content? Do we have access to it? It was said that content really wasn’t the focus as so much was the medium. So then for the example of writing and speech, is the communicated message the actual content? Or does it venture further than that to the hope for conversation? I must ask then, is there any way to simply receive content without a medium? My guess is NO; therefore, do we ever truly receive content in its original form as it was meant to be? Most likely not, because every medium influences and changes the perception of what is delivered. (such as comparing watching a play on TV versus actually experiencing it in person) Then it must be that the creator of that content understands that the content will and must be delivered by a medium and therefore takes that into consideration for creating the content. Then in that case, it appears that content really cannot stand alone, but must always be led by a medium. Thoughts?
