Metaphors influence our way of perceiving

First, what is thinking and perception? From Heidegger he actually seems a bit vague to me at times and seems like sometimes his phrases such as “Most thought-provoking in our thought-provoking time is that we are still not thinking” are a bit of a paradox. However, I do think perhaps we are not applying our thoughts when we are thinking like scientists. I think Heidegger says this because in science, you have to think using the scientific method and have to apply rules to your logic. Because of this, the results sometimes become more black and white. I have a sense that Heidegger might want to have more people thinking abstractly because sometimes it is a more influential way of thinking.

With digital media, I think that perhaps we can apply to Heidegger’s theory by thinking and using digital media with more metaphorical and abstract thoughts. From this we can probably make more interesting forms of digital media that will continue to influence the way people think. With metaphors, I already see that online abbreviations in chat rooms are already changing how people describe things. With “pwned” for example, this means “pawned or destroyed” and I think of how you can get destroyed or pawned during a game of chess. There are also a bunch of other abbreviations such as “lmao” or “Laugh my ass off”, to “omg” or “Oh my god!” Literally it is strange for you to laugh so hard that you lose a body part and it is a strange metaphorically to say that god belongs to you when you are shocked. With new metaphors such as online chat abbreviations, I feel like sometimes it is not our non-scientific thoughts but more of our dreamy, artistic, and metaphorical thoughts that continue to influence our way of thinking and expressing things.

But to get to the topic at hand, what do metaphors do for us, and how do they fit into digital media? Well, the first obvious answer to me is that a metaphor can say a lot in only a few words, for example: "she warmed my heart". This usually means you have taken a great liking to someone, or even fallen in love. But instead of spending a few minutes about how it makes you feel, people can simply smile and say 'She warmed my heart.'

In antoher regard, however, metaphors can help expand what we are trying to say. For example, maybe instead of saying 'It was a beautiful sunrise' we can say 'It looked like beautiful golden light was spillen over the mountains and down into the valley'

So for me, the two contrasts seem interesting.
