I would have to agree what Erika is saying in her recent post. Though a viewer/listener cannot respond while taking in news media, they still can retain the knowledge and form an individual opinion as long as they are actively watching, reading, or listening. Baudrillard used the example of the social control by the superstructure in Orwell’s novel 1984 as to what the affect could be of this era of non-response. Though he states that this is an extreme, he made the point that people are becoming isolated in the fact of a speech without a response. Fortunately, for the most part, people are still actively engaging in discussions about current events and new ideas. Often times watching a news program with a group of friends opens up a dialogue. In that sense, speech is able to exchange, give, and repay itself like Baudrillard said it should.
